I Want My Noggin Back!

Is it just me or do these "kids" playing The JumpArounds look a little too old for the pre-school set? The only two channels my son is allowed to watch are PBSKids and Noggin. However recently Noggin seems to have changed their lineup. Jack's Big Music Show and The Upside Down Show are gone and now they are bombarding us with The JumpArounds.

Unfortunately for me, my son seems to really enjoy the music but I can't help wonder what insidious plot is behind these musical interludes. The males in the group seem to represent over the top reverse stereotypes. One of the female members looks like a teenage Dora (coincidence?) and the other like every blond (although technically, I guess she is a redhead) teenager in every Disney movie.

The dancing and the lyrics are harmless enough, although I wish there was a little less yelling and more singing. I have no idea whether the actors are really singing and playing the instruments or not, but the sound is very canned.

The band was created for Nick Jr. and I really think that is where they belong. It's a little too early for idol worship in my house, so I will be limiting exposure from now on. Noggin is supposed to be for pre-school, not pre-teen band groupies!

After the Rain

Well, I asked for rain and I got it!
We have had thunderstorms every afternoon this week.
Florida weather is the craziest.
Why can't we have a nice morning rain, three days a week?
I was afraid some of the garden would get washed out,
but so far so good.

Even the parsley made it through.
I have yet to see if the carrot seeds were displaced from their rows.
I guess we will have to wait
and see if they sprout up all over the place!

Spelling Software for Children.

Recently the developer of SpellQuizzer software contacted me about trying out his spelling software. SpellQuizzer is a spelling program for helping children master their spelling and vocabulary. After looking at the demo on their website, I agreed to try the program and a copy of the software was provided to me.

As I have said many times before, I like my teaching methods, like my life: simple yet complete. SpellQuizzer is just that. This program allows parents to create their own personal spelling lists based on whatever their criteria may be.
According to their page for homeschoolers:

SpellQuizzer is ideal for...

1. Practicing the words in your homeschool curriculum. Just input the words in the spelling curriculum you are using and SpellQuizzer will help reinforce your child's lessons.

2. Preparing for spelling bees. You can create practice lists from the preparation materials provided by a spelling bee your child is entering. Also, we will be adding free, downloadable spelling lists for SpellQuizzer, complete with sound recordings, specifically for the purposes of spelling bee preparation soon. Watch our Downloadable Spelling Lists page for new lists soon.

3. Practicing the problem words that your child repeatedly misspells. Everyone has their own problem words that they have difficulty getting right. With SpellQuizzer you can create one or more custom lists of the words that your child struggles with. As the saying goes, "practice makes perfect". SpellQuizzer makes practice easy.

4. Learning words that can not be sounded out phonetically.
Dr. Edword William Dolch, PHD identified 315 "sight words" which can not be sounded out phonetically and therefore must be learned on sight. We have all 315 Dolch Sight Words (220 "service words" and 95 nouns) available in free download lists, organized by grade level, for SpellQuizzer at our Dolch Sight Words page. Just download the lists, import them into SpellQuizzer and you're all set. The lists come with pre-made sound recordings just for SpellQuizzer.

The software sells for $29.95 and they offer a 30 day free trial. Considering how many years of school you can use this for, I think the cost is very reasonable. Your computer will need a microphone to record your voice. If yours did not come with one, they are very inexpensive to purchase.

The part that made it the most fun for my son was that I could use the spelling words in personal sentences that he could relate to. I even told a complete story to him, using the words on the spelling list in sentences. So as he practices his words, he is also hearing me tell him a story. After he finished spelling practice, I asked him to re-tell the story to test his memory. Also making sure I verbalized the punctuation at the end of the sample sentences, he learns about sentence structure as well.

The program is very user friendly and even young children (my son is 4) will be able to navigate the lessons with ease. I have a feeling I will be using SpellQuizzer for many years to come and I will probably find more than one way to use it!

The Pumpkin that Bloomed Too Soon

Doesn't this look like a healthy pumpkin plant? I thought so too until I looked closer and saw it already had flowers on it.

This can't be right, it hasn't even started to spread into a vine yet! I have a feeling that those early blooms don't bode well for future harvest potential. Any pumpkin experts care to enlighten me?

Homeschool Biology Lessons

When it comes to lesson plans, I like things clear, concise and all inclusive. Tall order I know, but convoluted themes make me insane. Since we have been planting a garden, I've been working my son's lessons around that theme.

The Missouri Botanical Garden website has a very nice all inclusive site about the Biology of Plants. Everything you need for basic elementary school age lessons are there.
Plus they have teacher plans you can download to expand on the ideas.

You will also find other educational DVDs for sale on
the Botanical Garden website.
Such as: The Secret Of The Pond and What's In Your Backyard. I love the layout and simplicity of these sites. There is a wealth of information here!

Start a Butterfly Garden

While getting ready to plant our vegetable garden, I wanted to teach my son about the life cycle of butterflies and their role in the garden. Try I as might I could not find a caterpillar or a cocoon anywhere to study. So I went online and found the Live Butterfly Garden.

It comes with a postcard to order free Painted Lady larvae. We haven't gotten ours yet, but I will let you know how it turns out. When I showed the kit to my son he got upset and told me, " Butterflies are supposed to be free or they will die".

I was so proud of him! He has been listening, he does get it! Once he understood that we were going to set them free after they emerged from the cocoon, he couldn't wait for the larvae to arrive. On another note, I hate to think what it means for the environment in my area, that I couldn't find a caterpillar? Perhaps we will start a butterfly garden, after the vegetable one gets going.

Bean Sprouts!

What is it about seeing a beanstalk pushing up out of the dirt that fills you with hope and wonder? Is it watching the beauty of nature renewing itself or the wonder at the strength that tiny plant uses to push up out of a mound of dirt? For me it's both.

Our bush beans are sprouting!
So are the watermelons and the cucumbers.

I will transplant the tomatoes and peppers into the garden
this weekend.
Still waiting for rain. Seems everyone around us has gotten some showers but we still have not seen a drop. I can hear the thunder though, so at least that means the rainy season is here.

Free Online Garden Planner

While searching for layout ideas for my garden, I came across a free online garden planner. This version is easy to use and you can print out a copy of your garden, but it doesn't allow you to save it.
You can also buy and download a complete software version at Garden Planner for $19.95, not such a bad price considering you can use it for vegetable or ornamental gardens.
They have sample layouts or you can create your own space, free form style. It was fun to pretend I had planted a much fancier garden than I actually did!

Planting Has Begun

After adding some potting soil, the garden was finally ready for planting. The area didn’t exactly end up being a raised bed. After adding the top soil, I found that in order to have a true raised bed,
it was going to take a lot more dirt.
So I’m going with what I’ve got for now.
This area has good drainage so it should be okay.
I decided to start the vines first, close to the fence and plant the rest in stages. So far I have planted sugar baby watermelon, cucumbers, green beans (bush type), and sugar snap peas.

My son enjoyed poking his finger in the dirt to make holes and then patting down the dirt. He really wanted to water the seeds and got mad when I wouldn’t let him, because his idea of watering is blasting the dirt with the hose.

All was soon forgotten when I let him run through the sprinkler on the lawn instead.

I have some roma tomatoes and sweet pepper seedlings sprouting in pots to go in next. I also have marigolds sprouting to plant in between the vegetables to help deter insects.

A New Story Box

Just finished a new Story Box for a customer in Oklahoma.
She wanted the Number Matching set included and it was to be trimmed for a little girl. You can't tell in these pictures, but the dark felt top is actually a deep purple and the light letters are pink. The dark letters are also purple.

For some reason purple always looks black and pink comes out white with my camera. I'm sure it's me, my photo skills leave a lot to be desired. The felt hearts on the top are pink as well, it is really cute in real life! You can see more Story Boxes in my Etsy shop.

More From the Garden

We are pretty much spending all our time working on the garden lately so that's what I'll be writing about for a while, hope you don't mind. I will also be planning my son's lessons around it as well. I've got some before and after photos for you today.

I decided to put our vegetable garden just off the patio in a raised bed. Unfortunately this area was the over grown spot you see above. So why did I choose it? Well, this is the only area around the edge of the yard that I can be sure I haven't buried any pets or animals.
After twenty years in veterinary medicine, I have buried more than my fair share of wildlife and pets that didn't make it. Some the graves are marked by a special plant, but most are not. Also, I did not want to put the planting bed out in the open area because then the dogs would be sure to run through it.

After a week of digging and chopping, it's finally cleared. I had to move two medium sized Privet trunks and a large Split Leaf Philodendron. Now I'm busy digging out roots and turning the soil. My hands feels like they have been smashed with a hammer right now, thanks to all the pulling and shovel grasping. So far I have dug out three piles of roots. I've got the blisters to prove it!

Next step will be to build the bed's sides. I will be using an assortment of odds and ends for this. I have some stones I will stack up on one end and some low vinyl edging sections too. I could go buy some cedar planks, but I'd rather make use of what I have. So what if it looks a little odd, all is has to do is hold dirt, right?

Educational Book Savings!

Looking for homeschool workbooks? I just found Book Closeouts.com! They have all kinds of book closeout deals and right now they are having a .99 cent sale on educational books, workbooks and some supplies.

I ordered 34 titles for $34! Some of these are hardcover wildlife books and stories. I figure even if a few of them aren't great, they are only .99 cents and surely we can find some value in them!
