How My Garden Does Not Grow.

One of the plans I had for this summer has yet to materialize. I wanted to start a container garden on our porch. I wanted to grow some herbs and vegetables to teach my son about gardening and to save some money on produce. As of yet it has not happened.

My menopausal mind had apparently forgotten how unbearable the summers in Florida can get. Every time I stepped outside with the intention of organizing the pots and seeds, the thought of lugging 25lb bags of potting soil around in 95 degrees with 100% humidity sent me right back into the house with my tail between my legs.

Someday in the future, we will move further north and buy a house or small farm with a few acres of land. Having a sustainable garden, a few chickens and maybe a duck pond, has been a goal of mine for a while.

I need some land so my dogs can run (which is the reason we can’t have a garden in the back yard of this house) and so I can build a second house for my mother to come and live in when it’s time. I spend a lot of time looking at the lovely farm and garden pictures in your blogs and wishing....

In the meantime I guess we will wait for the weather to cool off a little and try the container garden again. I have some seeds I harvested from green peppers that were grown hydroponically I want to try and seeds from grocery store organic tomatoes. I also want to try and grow some red potatoes and maybe some carrots.

My porch is small so it can’t hold too many containers. I was hoping to have some beautiful photos of our garden growing to share with you by now, but alas I do not. So I found some photos of vegetables grown by other people (they probably would put mine to shame anyway). Enjoy!

We had good luck with container gardens started in September. Being in containers, the plants need more water, but fighting nematodes and such in the soil? Eck.
