A Dolphin's Tale of a Tail!

Photo courtesy of The Clearwater Marine Aquarium

I caught this story about "Winter" the dolphin on the news the other night and was so impressed that I had to tell you about it in case you haven't heard. Winter was injured as an infant in 2005, caught in crab traps and lost her tail as a result. Last year she was fitted with a prosthetic tail and now can swim with the best of them!

Prosthetic specialist Kevin Carroll is quoted as saying,
"My heart went out to her, and I was thinking I could probably put a tail on her," said Carroll, vice president of prosthetics at Hanger Orthopedic Group, Inc.

As a result, the technology used to make her tail comfortable has been used in prosthetics for people. She lives at The Clearwater Marine Aquarium in Florida and you can click on the link to read more about her.

This really is a heartwarming story and even though I believe that wild animals should be left in the wild, in this case I will make an exception and congratulate all involved for their compassion!
